Our Story
In the spring of 2020, Dr. Lorna Breen’s story broke the silence on a struggle shared by health workers everywhere. An emergency medicine physician who gave her all to her patients and colleagues, Lorna faced deep exhaustion during the pandemic but feared that seeking mental health care would cost her the career she loved. Tragically, Dr. Breen died by suicide on April 26, 2020.
Her passing was a devastating moment that was followed by an incredible outpouring of shared experiences, sparking a powerful, unifying movement.
Within a day of her passing, her story was published, prompting dozens, then hundreds, and ultimately thousands of health workers to reach out. Their experiences and stories proved that Lorna was not alone – that her concerns were the concerns of the greater healthcare community.
The sheer volume of courageous voices transformed a moment of profound grief into an undeniable movement for systemic change.
Today, the Dr. Lorna Breen Foundation acts as a catalyst, turning health workers’ experiences into momentum to build a healthcare system that finally cares for its own.
